Finding the best espresso maker can really save you a ton of money. After all, have you really thought about how much you're spending at Starbucks? If you add all those $4 lattes and such up, in a month or two you could have bought yourself a very nice express machine. You would rather just drive through and get your shot, you say? Don't be so quick to dismiss espresso machines. They're tons of fun, can be the life of the party, and who knows might help you unwind from that over stressful job you have.

There's just one questions, though. What's the best espresso maker on the market?

And just like what's the best movie, what's the best exercise, and what's the best vacation spot, this question doesn't really have an answer, either. You can come close to choosing the right espresso maker for your needs and budget, though. To do this, you need to know a little more about espresso machines in general.

There are basically four types of espresso machine, steam driven, pump and piston driven, and also an automatic type machine. Each has their pros and cons.

There's probably no way we're going to get away with calling any steam driven machine "the best espresso". These are your lower end machines. Made more for gifts and occasional fun. Having said that, the first espresso machine I ever owned was a steam machine and was given to me by my wife. That one present created a lot of fun and joy for us. So, who can argue with that?

In general, though, most candidates for the best espresso maker would be piston, pump, and automatic machines.

Piston and pump espresso machines are very similar. They're more the old style machine, with a lever handle that pressures the water through the machine. Both types are finicky, though. You have the grind your beans just right, for instance, or the machine's not going to work.

A lot of purists might easily consider piston or pump machines the best espresso machine.

If you're really going to be all inclusive about this, however, you really need to think about automatic machines. They're just as good as pump or piston machines, but not nearly so picky.

Either way, the goal is to enjoy your espresso, so decide what you think is the best espresso maker, then get one and start having fun.
