Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, just across the bridge from downtown Charleston, is undoubtedly the most popular place to buy a home in Charleston, SC. Noted as the oldest working plantation in the United States, the magnificent property features the world famous avenue of oaks, original slave cabins, butterfly garden and a colonial revival style mansion built in 1936 on the site of the original plantation house that burned down. Today, the plantation plays an important role as it grows and sells fresh produce at its local market, Boone Hall Farms Market that opened in March 2006. The plantation is also open to locals who want to pick fresh strawberries and other fruits and vegetables. It is a popular venue for food and wine festivals, namely the world's largest oyster roast in January.

Mount Pleasant was originally inhabited by Sewee Indians. In 1680, the area of Mount Pleasant and Sullivan's Island was granted to Captain Florentia O'Sullivan who brought the first settlers from England to this area. Mount Pleasant was also the secret site where nine men were trained to become the crew of the Confederate submarine H. L. Hunley.

The Charleston Land Company, established after the Civil War by a former slave and carpenter, Robert Scanlon, and Scanlonville, a 614 acre property that he purchased and sold to poor African-American man of Charleston, are one of the only four known cooperative ventures that were owned by freed slaves after the Civil War. Scanlonville today is becoming a popular area where old homes are giving way to new construction as it is located just minutes from the Ravenel Bridge.

For years, the Old Village was populated by wealthy Charlestonians that built summer homes on this side of the Cooper River. Today, the Old Village is still one of the most expensive and desired areas of Mount Pleasant for its charming atmosphere and water views. It is a walking neighborhood shaded by ancient oak trees. It is located near Shem Creek, a restaurant area frequented by locals and boaters.

Today, Mount Pleasant offers many new and established neighborhoods to choose from when looking to buy a home. Park West is a large and popular neighborhood as it offers new schools, shopping centers, medical care and parks all on the property.
